Emerging parallels between stomatal and muscle cell lineages.

چکیده
Stomatal development provides a model for understanding the molecular basis of how cell lineages are established and how cells differentiate into functionally mature structures. This article describes recent advancements in understanding the role of basic helixloop-helix (bHLH) proteins in stomatal lineage choice and differentiation in Arabidopsis. The emerging picture unravels that SPEECHLESS (SPCH), MUTE, and FAMA form heterodimers with SCREAM (SCRM)/ ICE1 and SCRM2 to specify the sequential steps during stomatal development. Intriguingly, both key genes and mechanisms needed for stomatal development are also required for the formation of skeletal muscle in animals.

Bone tissue engineering has been one of the most promising areas of research, providing a potential clinical application to cure bone defects. Recently, various stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs), bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs), umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs), adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs), muscle-derived stem cell...
متن کاملEmerging Parallels in the Generation and Regeneration of Skeletal Muscle
Previously, skeletal muscle regeneration appeared to be very different from embryonic specification of muscle, but in this issue of Cell, Polesskaya et al. show that Wnt signaling induces myogenesis in adult muscle stem cells in a manner analogous to muscle induction in the somite.
متن کاملLinking Turgor with ABA Biosynthesis: Implications for Stomatal Responses to Vapor Pressure Deficit across Land Plants1[OPEN]
Stomatal responses to changes in vapor pressure deficit (VPD) constitute the predominant form of daytime gas-exchange regulation in plants. Stomatal closure in response to increased VPD is driven by the rapid up-regulation of foliar abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and ABA levels in angiosperms; however, very little is known about the physiological trigger for this increase in ABA biosynthesis ...

متن کاملFerns are less dependent on passive dilution by cell expansion to coordinate leaf vein and stomatal spacing than angiosperms
Producing leaves with closely spaced veins is a key innovation linked to high rates of photosynthesis in angiosperms. A close geometric link between veins and stomata in angiosperms ensures that investment in enhanced venous water transport provides the strongest net carbon return to the plant. This link is underpinned by "passive dilution" via expansion of surrounding cells. However, it is not...
